The Waterford Fair is well known for the top craftspeople and
the five homes on tour each day. What may not be so well known
is that the Fair hosts two first-rate Art Exhibits. During the
days of the Fair, one of the Waterford Foundation’s period
red barns (on Second Street) is transformed into a rustic gallery
for the Red Barn Art Exhibit. This is a judged
show, featuring the work of some well known local and regional
fine artists who exhibit every year, as well as paintings and the
occasional sculpture by more than seventy artists. Past year winners.
Our judge again this year is Wendell Poindexter, professor of art and Visual Arts Department program manager at Frederick Community College in Frederick, Maryland. He also is art center director for the Mary Condon Hodgson Art Gallery and Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at the college. Mr. Poindexter holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Baltimore.
Downstairs in the barn is the fun and affordable Art Mart, where
one can find quality art at a reasonable cost. Here is more good
art, some by the same artists whose works hang upstairs.
We are proud of the quality of the art that is offered at the
Waterford Fair. The Red Barn Art Exhibit and the Art Mart present
yet another venue of beautiful, individually hand-crafted collections
in addition to the artisans who have booths.
Red Barn Exhibit: A judged show, with prizes awarded. View and
purchase paintings and other art pieces submitted by both amateur
and professional artists.
Art Mart: Located in the ground floor in the same Red Barn on
Second Street are paintings submitted just for sale. There is a
$450 price ceiling for these works.
The Florence Kiley Fellowship for Study in the Fine Arts, which
honors the memory of a dedicated Loudoun County art teacher and
artist, is a competition open to high school students in the graduating
classes of 2011 or 2012. The winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship, to be
used for further study in the arts. Artists may enter one work.
The winner will be displayed during the Fair at the Red Barn.
