SUMMARY:June 22\, 2024 Historic Waterford Walking Tour - 4pm
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Waterford National Historic Landmark on a guided historic walking tour!  In 1970 the Secretary of the Interior designated Waterford and its rural surround a National Historic Landmark. Well into the 20th century\, most Americans lived and worked on farms or in small towns like this one. Few of these places have remained much as they were. Waterford\, miraculously\, is one that has. Walk with us through time for clues to Waterford’s character and tenacity. It is a story of ordinary people who did extraordinary things. They built a thriving town from wilderness; they endured a long and bloody war that threatened to destroy their home; and in good times and bad they held tightly to their vision of a special place. Preserving the village and its setting as a national site for everyone is the principal mission of the Waterford Foundation. \nOn your tour\, you will see houses from the mid 18th century to the 21st. The tour begins at the Old School and covers the entire village in about 90 minutes. Tours will run rain or shine\, so come dressed for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. \nTo register\, visit https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/WuN_ZcxnbN7MiUjcLHVu5w

SUMMARY:Invasives Cleanup on Phillips Farm

Please join us\, we need all the help we can get! The gathering point is at the Schooley Mill entrance to the Phillips Farm. SUMMARY:Lyceum: Historian & Author Taylor Chamberlin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating discussion by Waterford historian and author Taylor Chamberlin about his hew book “My Old Carpetbagger\,”  which uses the story of his great-grandparents to reveal new aspects about Virginia and national history. Capt. Simon Elliot Chamberlin and Edith Matthews met at the end of the Civil War\, when the Union Cavalry officer was provost marshal at Point of Rocks and the teen-aged Quaker was still reeling from the devastation of the family farm (Clifton) outside Waterford.  Beginning with the Taylors of Taylorstown and the Govers of Waterford\, Edith’s family played a prominent\, if not always exemplary role in Loudoun’s Quaker community and would pay heavily for its support of abolition and the Union. \n“Although Clifton would remain an anchor for the family throughout Reconstruction and the turbulent years beyond\, Simon Elliot’s career as farmer\, political activist and Federal employee would take him from chairmanship of Virginia’s Republican Party to sugar plantations in Cuba and British Guyana\, with many an adventure in between. Copies of Taylor’s book will be available after the program\, and the author will give another talk to the Lovettsville Historical Society on June 9 that will focus more on Simon Elliot’s Civil War service and brief stint in the U.S. Cavalry.” \nJune 2\, 2024 \n3:00 pm \nWaterford Old School\, Auditorium \n40222 Fairfax St. \nWaterford\, VA 20197 \nEvent organized by Waterford Foundation’s Education Committee

SUMMARY:September 30\, 2023 Historic Waterford Walking Tour - 4pm
