Board Leadership Transition

May 29, 2026 by Stephanie Thompson

Following the Annual Member Meeting on April 21, 2026, the Waterford Foundation board of directors elected a new slate of officers, marking the end of four years of leadership by president Sue Manch. Incoming president Carl Scheider shared the following remarks on Manch’s leadership and the path forward for the organization under his guidance:

On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Susan Manch for four years of steady, thoughtful leadership as our President. She guided the Foundation through a pivotal period with focus and sound judgment, strengthening our programs, securing critical preservation funding, and expanding our reach across Waterford and western Loudoun, particularly through her Herculean effort leading the Loudoun Transmission Line Alliance. We’re fortunate she’ll continue her work on the Board supporting multiple Foundation efforts.

I’m honored to serve as the Foundation’s next President. Our mission is clear: to preserve, protect, and share the historic village of Waterford, and to ensure its heritage and rural landscape remain intact and protected.

To move that work forward, I’ll lead the Board to update our strategic goals and priorities; expand fundraising and grant support; advance key preservation programs and restoration projects across our properties and open spaces; enhance our communication channels; strengthen partnerships; and reinforce our long-term financial stability by expanding the Foundation’s endowment.

For nearly 300 years, Waterford has endured because each generation chose to create, restore, preserve, and protect the village. Now it’s our turn to carry that work forward and to preserve this extraordinary place and its history for future generations.

-Carl Scheider
